Abseiling is actually pretty easy. The only part that most people find hard is walking slowly backwards over the cliff-edge because your instincts tell you you're not safe and are walking to a bloody death! But if you've ever seen "Braniac: Science Abuse", the ropes you risk your life on can hold up a large van several meters off the ground. So unless your seriously overweight and weigh more than 1 tonne, abseiling is completely safe and risk assesed.

Abseiling allows you to control the speed you descend with one hand holding and gently releasing a specially designed knot so that gives you a sense of control while an abseiling proffesional is holding on above incase you let go because your drink bottle is leaking in your back pocket! While abseiling down a rocky face, you feel a sense of freedom with a surge of excitement from the perilous drop below or the amazing views, it depends on your frame of mind. For me i think it was a bit of both.

But if you're abseiling in a cave, which can happen alot because of large caverns from water erosion, the darkness adds to the thrill because you don't know when you're at the bottom. Sometimes abseiling, you'll need to walk down the cliff edge or cave wall horizontally. This can be quite difficult because in caves the walls are all wet so my feet kept slipping off and my body kept banging into the wall but it doesn't hurt.

Abseiling is great fun even though it doesn't last long so its more of an adventorous individual activity than a group/family outing, but if you are going to go abseiling, you have to do it from a great height or loads of small ones underground or the short excitement isn't worth the time (and money).
