South England Holiday Guide

The south of England covers a wide variety of attractions and destinations. Almost all of its counties have stretches of beautiful coastline so you`re never going to be far from refreshing sea breezes, stunning scenery and great activity options on offer.

You may opt to base your stay in one location, taking accommodation in a hotel, timeshare, or bed and breakfast establishment.

If you decide to vary where you will stay, it`s a good idea to have an itinerary planned and you would be advised to book your accommodation in advance, especially during the peak months of the summer.

Devon and Cornwall are in the far south west of the country and have long been hugely popular tourist destinations. Devon is a lush, green county with a network of stunning country lanes and picture postcard villages. At its heart lies Dartmoor, a wild and spectacular national park. Cornwall has a proud Celtic heritage and scenery that will take your breath away. There are scores of quaint fishing villages where you can explore the harbours and picturesque, winding back lanes packed with tiny cottages and new delights to be discovered around each new corner.

Further along the coast, Dorset has much to delight fans of Thomas Hardy`s work, as its towns and villages featured widely in his novels, albeit under fictional names. Dorchester is an old Roman town with an amphitheatre and museum commemorating its ancient history. It`s just one of many fascinating inland towns, each rich in history and atmosphere, such as Sherborne, Beaminster, Blandford and Shaftesbury. Also, Dorset`s coastline is a wonder to behold, incorporating towering cliffs and beautiful bays. It has a rich geological heritage and has long been a major attraction for fossil hunters.

In the far south east of the country, Kent is often referred to as `the garden of England`, a name it richly deserves thanks to the vast orchards that have been established here since the Romans invaded. It`s not just fruit that`s grown here, but also grapes for wine and hops for beer. Many wineries offer tours and tastings. Kent`s iconic coastal scenery is symbolised most prominently by the famous `White Cliffs of Dover`, but there is more to this county including castles and historic monuments. Don`t miss the wartime tunnels where you can learn about Dover`s secret past during a guided tour.

Next to Kent, East Sussex contains some of the south coast`s best known seaside towns, such as Eastbourne, Hastings and Brighton. Each has its own delights such as the long promenade and pier at Eastbourne or the castle at Hastings. These busy and bustling towns certainly offer much to keep children amused whilst on holiday.

The south of England also includes West Sussex and the counties of Avon, Hampshire and Gloucestershire, along with London, the capital of England. With Groupon deals, many fantastic offers on accommodation and days out in this region make it a most desirable destination.
